Description:The covered market hall, seen here on the right was built in 1854, in order to supplement the portable street markets that took place outside, and was demolished in 1961. Arthur Morgan, probably a tobacconsit's, and the Red Lion pub can be seen on the left of this photograph. Both the Arthur Morgan and Red Lion premises were actually timber framed buildings that were refronted in the 18th century.

These buildings were located on what was then known as Penkhull street, before the whole street became known as the High street in 1954. The bus stop located outside the Red Lion demonstrates a time when traffic flowed freely through the very centre of the town.
