Description:The tall building on the left hand side of this photograph was the original covered Market Hall. The Hall was built in 1854, in order to supplement the portable street markets that took place outside, and was demolished in 1961. This site was the entrance to the Warner Brothers cinema in 2002. The building to the right of the Market Hall is Woolworths, who were still trading in the new building they built on the site in 2002.

The buses on the right hand side of the photograph are just emerging from Hassell Street. This was a new thoroughfare at the time as previously buildings existed where the road came through. At the time this photograph was taken the area in the foreground of the Hassell street junction was called Penkhull Street, with the other half containing the Guildhall being High Street. Penkhull Street became the High Street in 1954.
