The King and Queen visited North Staffordshire on the 22nd and 23rd April 1913, and attended a civic welcome in Nelson Place on the 22nd. The Newcastle Cinema Theatre can be seen in the background. This was originally the Royal Theatre, built by John Pepper in 1787, and was converted into a cinema in 1910.
