Description:This Church Army Recreation Hut postcard with a generic view of a soldier was sent from Private J Lawley, 11109 of ‘A’ Company, 10th South Staffordshire Regiment, Penkridge Bank Camp near Stafford, to friends in Oreston, near Plymouth.

Private Lawley has written: “Dear Friends, Just a few lines to you hoping you all are going on well as it leaves me at present. I was home last Sunday and everybody was surprised to see how well I was looking. I remembered you to Mother & Dad and they with me send love to all”.

The 10th (Reserve) Battalion and 11th (Reserve Battalion) South Staffordshire Regiment were based at Rugeley Camp from October 1915.

The postcard was published by the Church Army Press, Cowley, Oxford. Postcards with generic views were often created so that they could be used at any training camp in the country. It has a franking mark of Penkridge Bank Camp which was also known as Rugeley Camp, but the date is unclear.

There is a picture of a Church Army Hut in another view. Religious groups or sometimes a single local benefactor would sponsor these buildings in order to give comfort to the soldiers who were far from home. Rugeley Camp also had at least two Wesleyan huts according to the detailed map.
