Description:Crushed vehicles being removed after the railway embankment collapsed at Main Road in Colwich on the evening of 13 December 1954. In the background can be seen the railway bridge and signal box and beyond the is the tower of St. Michael and All Angels' Church. The collapse happened on the left hand side of the road in this view and threatened to destroy the railway bridge.
Paul Millard remembers the event: "I was there when it happened on the way home from Colwich school. The embankment came down after a period of heavy rain and took two or three vehicles out. Nothing the drivers could do about it. We had to come home from school via the footbridge over the railway and then follow the Crossheads Road down to Little Haywood. From what I remember one vehicle was a van that was full of crocks which was partly flattened, and a car and a small lorry were damaged."
