Date:5th of July 1924

Description:A group of women in Tudor costume standing in front of the South Tower of Tutbury Castle, often known as Queen Mary's Tower. Tutbury Castle was used four times as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots in 1569-1570 and during the mid 1580s.

This photograph was probably taken during the Historical Pageant held at the castle on 5 July 1924. This is probably the final episode, showing Mary Queen of Scots arriving at the castle with her maids of honour. Despite rainy weather the Pageant raised considerable funds for the restoration of St. Mary's Church.

Photograph by the Rev. C.F.L. Barnwell (1853-1933) who was Vicar of Stramshall from 1879 to 1933, and who was a keen amateur historian and photographer.
