Description:A poster advertising the visit of Mr J.H. Blackburne, 'Champion blindfold chess player of the world' to the Town Hall, Cheadle in March 1897. On the evening of 29 March he played 8 simultaneous games of chess, blindfolded. On 30 March he played 30 simultaneous games of chess.

Manchester born Joseph Henry Blackburne (1841-1924) was the leading figure in British chess during the late 19th century and was nicknamed 'the Black Death'. His tours of blindfold and simultaneous chess helped popularise the game in Britain.
