Description:This postcard view is titled 'An Old Deer Barn, Tittensor, Stone'. This deer barn may have been one of several located around Trentham Deer Park or at nearby Tittensor Chase. 'Trentham Conservation Area Appraisal, January 2013' (Stafford Borough Council) mentions that in 1765-67 the park was extended to the north and west which involved rebuilding of parts of the brick wall, the creation of a ha-ha west of the hall in 1767, and some tree planting and a thatched deer barn and a hermitage were built in the newly acquired area west of the wall.

Sue Gregory’s, 'A Brief History of Trentham Gardens' notes that in the 1770s repairs were made to the hermitage and deer barns in the park and nearly 8000 trees were planted in the Hanchurch Hills.

Trentham Park evolved from a 12th century priory and a walled deer park which was to stop deer roaming over the surrounding area. Over the years the park expanded and the walls and boundaries changed on several occasions. Today (August 2020) the park forms part of the Trentham Estate with gardens and grounds which have been developed into a major tourist attraction, exhibition, conference and leisure centre.

This postcard was photographed by Stone photographer Phillip Dutton, of 63 High Street, Stone.
