Date:March 1908

Description:This postcard picture of ‘The Old Elizabethan Carved Oak Bedstead’ was published during March 1908 to advertise an auction of items at Uttoxeter Town Hall by W S Bagshaw & Son, Auctioneers. This Bedstead was one of the items listed for sale at the time.

The Room of Antiquities was a Uttoxeter based antiques business from around 1890, which was owned by G F Bowden until he decided to leave the business and have the contents disposed of. In Roy Lewis’s book, ‘Around Uttoxeter’, it is mentioned that the sale of items was due to 'instructions from several gentlemen who are leaving the town'.

The bed had been displayed at Gerrard's antique shop in the High Street but there is no record of whether it was sold or where it went (or where it came from in the first place).
