Description:The monument was erected in 1836 in honour of the 1st Duke of Sutherland, George Granville Leveson-Gower, at Trentham Gardens. The monument was designed by Charles Winks and the figure was sculpted under the supervision of Sir Frances Leggatt Chantrey.

At his death in 1833, the 1st Duke of Sutherland was the greatest landowner in Britain and was a vastly influential figure. However, he is most often remembered in association with the infamous Highland Clearances.
