Description:One of the most frequented buildings in the Camp would have been the General Post Office. At Brocton Camp it was situated alongside the main Chase Road between 'I' and 'M' Battalion Lines. It is the building on the right of this picture. On the opposite side of the road is the Guard House and Commanding Officer’s Office of 'M' Lines. Before the Camps were built the land had to be cleared and decent roadways put in place. The perfect material for the road foundation was a by-product of the nearby foundries producing shells for the war effort. The stony waste matter separated from metals during the smelting process or refining of ore was excellent for providing this base. Early images show steam rollers laying these roads as the Camps were hastily built. Walking some of the tracks today you can still see the shiny, unusual material beneath your feet.
