Description:Joe Louis (1914-1981) was an American professional boxer who was world heavyweight champion between 1937 and 1949. He is reckoned to be one of the greatest boxers of all time. Louis enlisted as a private in the United States Army in 1942. The US Army recognised his value in raising morale amongst the forces so he was placed with the Special Services Division and spent much of the war on a celebrity tour, visiting England in 1944.
