Littleton colliery Steam with Whiston and Wimblebury from the Foxfield Railway

Date:1993

Description:This film footage shows two steam locomotives and a brake van that were visiting Littleton Colliery near Cannock on the 12th to 15th November 1993. The two locomotives 'Whiston' works number HE3694 of 1950 and 'Wimblebury' works number HE3839 of 1956 were both built by The Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds to their 'austerity' design - a class eventually totalling 485 locomotives built between 1943 and 1964 - some being sub contracted to W.G. Bagnall of Stafford. British Railways used 75 examples whilst the overwhelming majority of the remainder worked for the National Coal Board - 'Whiston' in the Lancashire coalfield until 1981 and 'Wimblebury' in the South Staffordshire coalfield until 1973. Both locomotives are privately owned ('Whiston' purchased by Steve Turner having found it in a derelict statein February 1983) and it has been based on the Foxfield Railway Stoke on Trent since March 1983 - the same home as 'Wimblebury' and the brake van. Both locomotives remain based at Foxfield and are in working order as at May 2019. The brake van also but now painted in LMS Bauxite livery.

Filmed by Steve Turner.
