Description:An aerial view of Stafford Gaol, looking east. In the foreground is Gaol Road. Stafford Gaol was built and opened in 1793. The crescent bock was built in 1830 and further building took place in the 1850s and 1860s, including the women's prison, a new chapel, kitchens and mill. This photograph was taken after the original gate-house and mid-19th century towers were demolished in 1952.
St. George's Hospital and Corporation Street can be seen beyond. Originally built as the County Asylum in 1818, it was later the County Mental Hospital before becoming St. George's Hospital in the 1950s after management transferred to the National Health Service . The hospital closed in 1994 and has since been redeveloped as residential accommodation.
