Description:Bert Bentley was a mining geologist and he often noted rock outcrops in his photographs. This is a section of the Bunter Pebble Beds in the Hilton Gravel Co quarry on Hulme Banks near Longton.

Bunter Pebble Beds are coarse sandstone deposits containing rounded quartzite pebbles. They are thought to have been carried to the English Midlands in a large river flowing from the Brittany area of France, abrading and rounding the pebbles. These were deposited about 220 - 250 million years ago (Triassic period) during flash floods in desert environments. The sand and gravel aggregate has been used for concrete.
