Description:This ceramic pot is marked 'Stoke and Wolstanton Union, 1922' and came from the workhouse at Chell.

A new workhouse was built on Turnhurst Road, Chell in 1838/9, after Tunstall became part of the new Wolstanton and Burslem Union.
It was said to have been "'a palatial structure' costing £6,200 and providing accommodation for 400 inmates."
In 1922 this workhouse amalgamated with Stoke Union Workhouse and so was called 'Stoke and Wolstanton Union', and this pot dates to this time.
Not long after the Workhouse was re-named the Westcliffe Institution.
It became a home for poor people until 1975 when the 300 residents were moved into five purpose built homes in other parts of the city. The building was demolished in 1993.
