Description:The German Military Cemetery on Cannock Chase was first opened to the public on 10 June 1967.
It was established under the terms of an agreement of 16 October 1959 between the governments of the United Kingdom and the Federal Republic of Germany. The German War Graves Commission designed and constructed this cemetery, to which the bodies of most of the German war dead in Great Britain and Northern Ireland were transferred.
Most of those who lie at peace here died in prisoner of war camps. Others were airmen who were killed when their airships and aircraft were brought down or crashed, or sailors who died at sea whose bodies were washed ashore. Of the total of 4,941 war dead interred here, 2,143 died during World War I and 2,798 during World War II.
Although most of the German war dead in Britain were transferred here, a few still remain buried elsewhere in Britain.
This cemetery is cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on behalf of its sister organisation, the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgraberfursorge).
Approximately 400 metres away on a separate site is the Cannock Chase War Cemetery (Commonwealth War Cemetery) located on the Stafford to Hednesford road. The cemetery contains the graves of 24 British and 73 New Zealand dead from World War I and 3 British dead of World War II, together with 257 German dead from World War I and 27 from World War II. This cemetery is also cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
