Date:August 1907

Description:This black and white postcard shows two horses killed in the nationally infamous Wyrley Outrages of 1903-15. The two mares belonging to Captain Harrison of Harrison's Colliery were attacked in August 1907. The brown mare was found dead but the grey, which was in foal, was found to be alive but was promptly put out of its misery by a veterinary surgeon.

Local parson's son, George Edalji, a Birmingham based solicitor, was convicted of similar crimes in 1903 and sentenced to seven years penal servitude. After campaigning by his father and the interest of Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, George was released in May 1907 and granted a free pardon - but no compensation. The Law Society were happy to allow George to be reinstated as a Solicitor.
