Description:A postcard picture of Cannock's bowling green with 'The Green' behind. This 18th century house was modernised in the mid-19th century by Bernard Gilpin, owner of the famous edge-tool manufactory.
To the left is the 1736 Conduit Head building. Cannock's water quality was said to rival Malvern's. Dr William Byrche of Lea Croft Hall allowed the water to be piped from a spring at Rumer Hill to Cannock town centre. This was funded by suscription. Only Dr Birche's house 'The Green', had a direct-piped water supply; others had to collect it from the Conduit Head. Six hand-pumps were later distributed about the town. By 1939 the water was deemed to be contaminated, possibly by subsidence affecting the pipes, and this supply was terminated. The Conduit Head building still stands (2018).
