Description:Some of the occupants of Hut 35, "H" Lines in January 1917. They are Leicester and South Staffordshire Regiment soldiers and most wear the vertical gold stripe on the left cuff which indicates a wound received in action. They are some of the lucky survivors of the Somme where on the first day of battle, July 1st 1916, official records state 21,392 soldiers were killed or missing, presumed dead. In September 1917 "H" Lines would become the headquarters of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade 5th Reserve Battalion.
