Description:This photograph was taken in 1982 and is the entrance to the gravel quarry near the top of Chase Road coming up the hill from Brocton. It is now a quiet area set aside for wildlife but before vast quantities of sand and gravel was removed lay two Battalion lines, "F" and "G". Originally built to house troops they were adapted in 1917 to hold German Prisoners of War, mainly in transit to other Camps or to a neutral country as part of an exchange agreed by the warring parties. Brocton became one of the larger Camps to hold prisoners and had a number of other Camps under its jurisdiction throughout the Midlands. Some of the prisoners fit enough for work were used on local farms, quarries, timber-works, road building and on stately homes as most available man-power had gone to War.
