Description:This photograph was taken from just north of the flight of locks at Bedford Street in Shelton. The camera is looking northwards along the Caldon Canal with the winding towers of Wolstanton Colliery on the left, Shelton Steel Works in the centre and the spoil tip to the right. On the skyline near the left edge is the spire of St Margaret's Church in Wolstanton.
The line of houses across the centre is on Pretoria Road. The Etruria Canal Basin is hidden between the roof of the mill and the houses. Much of the old steelworks land is now the site of Festival Park and the colliery site is a retail park.

Alongside the Caldon Canal in the foreground is the Etruria Vale Flint Mill operated by Mellor Mineral Mills. The company was founded in the 1790s and produced ground silica and feldspar and prepared clay. The canal side location crucial in importing the bulky raw materials. The wharf has piles of materials and canal crane and narrow boat alongside. Just 400 yards round the corner to the left is the junction with the Trent & Mersey Canal. The mill has been demolished and cleared and the land has been developed for housing, James Brindley Close.
