Description:This map shows the plans of navigation for a canal near Longbridge near Burslem and to go to Newcastle-under-Lyme, Lichfield, Tamworth and to Wilden in Derbyshire. It was made by James Brindley and revised and approved by John Smeaton. It shows the identity of the landowners along the length of the proposed canal, the distances and the rises and falls in gradient. It also shows the amount of land required for each stretch. You can see the spur into Newcastle from the main canal. In the event Newcastle had two canals—one which came up from Hanford and terminated near what is now the Boat and Horses Inn on Brook Street and the other which brought the coal and ironstone from Apedale to Stubbs’ Walks.
