Description:Dorothy Pattison, better known as 'Sister Dora', who was famous for her work nursing the poor in Walsall.
She was born on 16 January 1832 at Hauxwell in Yorkshire. In 1864 she joined the Sisterhood of the Good Samaritans at Coatham, Middlesbrough, and became known as Sister Dora. In January 1865 she was sent to work at Walsall Hospital in Bridge Street and devoted the rest of her life to nursing. In 1875 she worked for six months treating thousands of smallpox sufferers in an epidemic hospital on Deadman's Lane, now Hospital Street. She was well known in Walsall for providing care for railway workers who had suffered industrial accidents. She died on 24 December 1878 having developed breast cancer.
