Description:The view in a northerly direction from Hollywall Lane towards Line Houses. The Harecastle railway tunnels run beneath the fields in the foreground and a ventilator shaft can be seen in the left centre. Line Houses, on the horizon, was a hamlet on the hillside directly over the Harecastle tunnels and consisted of two rows of terraced houses or cottages. These were built to house workers constructing the railway tunnels in the 1840s. One terrace had been built earlier to accommodate workers on the parallel Trent and Mersey Canal tunnel in the 1820s. The hamlet is now a fixed caravan site. Boathorse Lane runs up the valley and was the overland route used by canal horses to bypass the Harecastle Tunnels which lacked a towpath.
