Date:1860 - 1880 (c.)

Description:One and a half pence copper token issued by the Stone Rifle Volunteer Club. The 40th Staffordshire (Stone) Rifle Volunteers were formed in 1860 under the leadership of Captain B.T. Fitzherbert (1836-1919) of Swynnerton.

During the 19th century it was common for publicans, licencees, shopkeepers and other organisations to issue their own tokens or 'checks'. Most of the checks issued in Staffordshire were made by Birmingham and Black Country diesinkers and stamping workshops. They could be spent on goods sold at the named shop, and they also served as advertisements for the business.

Obverse: 'STONE RIFLE VOLUNTEER CLUB'. Stafford Knot insignia in centre.
Reverse: '1 1/2' within wreath of flowers.
