Description:The George Inn (formerly the George and Dragon) and Hotel on Castle Street. This grade II listed building has an early 19th century façade behind which is an earlier timber-framed structure. The hotel closed in December 2014. The George Inn was established in 1739. At the time of this photograph it was owned by Ansell's brewery. Ansell's sold it to Anton and Cheryl Hyland in 1985. They refurbished it into a ten bedroom hotel with restaurant and conference suite and renamed it the St. George Hotel; it became part of the Best Western hotel group. It was then sold to the Slater family who started the Eccleshall Brewery at the George in 1995. Slater's brewery was re-located to larger premises in Stafford in 2004. The building included a draper's shop. In 1851 the owner was Mr Lycett. By 1871 and until at least 1901 the business was run by Henry Vyle. In the mid 20th century it was Alfred Lee's gentleman's outfitters shop. In latter years it was the George's restaurant.
