Description:One of the highlights of the local farming year was the fatstock sale held at the cattle market in Mill Street. Farmers entered their prime beasts and the winner received a cup presented by the chairman of the Urban Council (later the Town Mayor).

For many years it was the tradition for the prize beast to be purchased by the Crown Hotel, to be slaughtered by a local butcher and the meat used by the hotel over the Christmas period.

This photograph shows the Town Mayor of Stone, Philip Leason, presenting the trophy to one of the winners.

Eccleshall's cattle market and fatstock sale were transferred to Stone following its closure.
