Date:1900 - 1910 (c.)

Description:'Toad', one of the 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotives which operated with the 3ft 6in cable-operated narrow gauge line connecting Froghall Wharf to the limestone quarry at Cauldon Low, which opened in 1849. 'Toad' was one of two locomotives purchased by the North Staffordshire Railway Company from Henry Hughes' Works at Loughborough in 1877. The other was named 'Frog'. These locomotives shunted the wagons from the quarry face at Cauldon to the top of the incline prior to their attachment to the cable system. A third steam locomotive, 'Bobs', made by Bagnalls of Stafford, was added in 1901. The narrow gauge system continued in use until 25th March 1920.
