Description:The canal in this postcard view was built by Sir Nigel Gresley of Knypersley Hall to transport coal from his pits at Apedale to Newcastle-under-Lyme. Permission to build the canal was granted in 1775. In the distance can be seen the chimney and headgear of Apedale Colliery. Crossing the canal is Burley Bridge which was demolished in the 1980s.
