Description:The former goods yard at Brook lane, a derelict part of Pool Dam Branch railway, which was opened in 1850. The railway was built as an industrial line to connect the Silverdale mines and ironworks with Pool Dam, originally so that the freight could then be transferred to the Newcastle Canal. After the link was made at Newcastle to the North Staffordshire railway, the link with the canal at Pool Dam was of little use and freight travelled directly along the line.
The Newcastle canal was a 4 mile level canal from the Trent & Mersey Canal at Stoke to Newcastle-under-Lyme.The canal was authorised by an Act of parliament 1795 and completed in about 1800. The canal was part closed and dammed at Trent Vale in 1921 and abandoned in 1935 and subsequently filled in.
