The Goose Chase Competition began in 1985 during GEC’s ownership of the company. It became an annual event for employees from Departments within the combine to form teams and compete in a series of inter-works challenges, games and team building exercises. Along with map reading, walking, cycling and camp craft, physical and mental endeavour were combined into a series of weekend competitions held at a base camp in remote rugged countryside often at Beddgelert or Rhayader in Wales and occasionally at Castleton in the Peak District or Borrowdale in the Lake District in England. On the final day of the Competition a Sunday lunch was provided sometimes in a hotel near to the base camp for all those involved (often around 100 employees) and following lunch the winning teams were presented with prizes and trophies.

The Personnel/Human Resources Department (from the previous year’s winners) would be responsible for organising the next year’s Competition arrangements, which included a base camp location, transport, meals, marshals, first aiders and support from employees and managers to ensure that the weekend ran smoothly.

Later in 1995 the Goose Chase Competition teams were from:-
Hixon – GEC ALSTHOM Balteau (1 team)
Kidsgrove – GEC ALSTHOM Low Voltage Equipment (2 teams)
Liverpool – GEC ALTHOM Low Voltage Equipment (3 teams)
Stafford – GEC ALSTHOM Protection and Control (3 teams), GEC ALSTHOM Transformers (2 teams), GEC ALSTHOM Large Generators (2 teams), GEC ALSTHOM Cegelec Substation Projects (1 team) and Perkins Engines (2 teams).
Stone – GEC Meters (1 team)
