Description:Apprenticeship indenture of William Vigarstaff to learn the trade of a broad silk weaver, 1825

The weaving of silk was organised by ‘undertakers’, who owned a number of looms and employed journeymen and apprentices. Apprenticeships normally lasted for seven years. This apprentice would have learned his trade in a house such as those on Wood Street Leek.
