Description:St Matthew’s Hospital, Burntwood case note extract for Frances Jones: housewife, 52 ‘had 14 children, 6 died, most in infancy’…. ‘says she is in misery’…. Frances was a long-term patient and lived into old age.

In the Victorian era men and women with mental health conditions were sent to the Asylum. These women were treated at St Matthew’s Hospital, Burntwood. The photographs are in their case notes, which include background information about their lives.
