Description:Native Americans considered making clothes a serious task and were all made by hand by the women in the tribe. Animal hides were most commonly used to make the clothes from the animals they hunted, such as elk and deer. The women used animal bones, teeth and quills for decoration so the more the dress was covered the greater the hunting skills of the men. However, as America was colonised and Native Americans were forced from their land and in greater contact with both other tribes and European customs the style of dress changed. Tribes adopted each other’s traditional dress and incorporated glass beads that were traded from the Europeans. This dressed was acquired by the museum in 1965 and forms part of the 'Shorter Collection' and was once owned by Clarice Cliff and her husband Colley Shorter who lived in Newcastle at the time.
