Description:The chemise was one of the first undergarments a Victorian woman wore, as it protected the skin from the corset and vice versa, as it was much easier to launder than a corset and cheaper. We believe this chemise to be from the earlier Victorian period, due to its round neck, short sleeves and mid-calf length. Although later chemises incorporate the same styles they are usually much more heavily decorated with lace and embroidery and made out of silk or fine cotton. The basic style of this chemise exhibit that it was meant for everyday use, as chemises meant for social or evening wear were finer and more detailed.
