Thomas and Uriah Slack lived in Church Leigh, they were both local brick makers. They produced a deep red Staffordshire brick, upon which was stamped "SLACK". These bricks became well known locally as the 'slack brick'. The clay used to make the bricks was dug out of the ground around Church Leigh and many of the clay pits can still be seen today. In 1869 Uriah Slack's family built Wellcroft Farm in Church Leigh.
On 24th June 1874 Thomas Slack died at the age of 58, with his brother Uriah at his side. The cause of death was phthisis, which is more commonly known as pulmonary tuberculosis. He is now buried in Church Leigh grave yard.
