Description:Postcard view of the entrance front of Burntwood Asylum, later St. Matthew's Hospital, a name officially adopted in 1948.

The hospital was built by the County of Stafford for mentally ill patients and opened in 1864. The architect was Richard Lambie Moffatt. It could take up to 1000 patients at this time. The Hospital closed in 1995 and most of the buildings were demolished to make way for a large housing estate.
