Description:This portrait was taken around 1914 and shows the two youngest children of Cannock coal miner Thomas Penton and Sarah Alice Penton. They had eleven children in total, all of whom lived to adulthood. Beatrice, the younger sister (seated) suffered from severe epilepsy. She was admitted to the Burntwood Asylum in 1949 where after psychosurgery (a frontal lobotomy) she developed complications. Beatrice became a permanent inpatient at Burntwood Asylum, which later became St. Matthew's Hospital. She died there aged 50 in 1955.
