Date:1686

Description:Robert Plot was extremely interested in natural history and consequently became the first Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum and Professor of Chemistry in 1683, after Elias Ashmole persuaded Oxford University to design a museum around and for his collection in Broad Street.
The Natural History of Staffordshire, 1686 was Plot’s second book (after his The Natural History of Oxford-shire, 1677), which details the natural curiosities he found in the county. The book has been described by critics to be more philosophical based than his first book and to be is greatest achievement during this period. Although, his beliefs on alchemy have been discredited his views and values are stereotypical for the time period.

“Fir it ftood, fays He, with its Convex part toward the Sun, and its Concave toward a fomwhat obfcure reprefentation of a Mock-Sun to the Southward; whence Fromondus rightly concluded, that the Horns could not refpect the Earth, but being averle from the rifing Sun, muft needs be ftretched to the Weftward.” P.5.

Note: Before 19th century in books an 's' often looked like 'f'.
