Description:A 'Sylvester' patent flat iron made by Salter & Company of West Bromwich. It is made of cast iron with a tubular steel handle. This type of iron is also known as a 'sad' or 'solid' iron and was heated directly on a stove, with the risk that the laundry would be marked with coal smuts.

This iron is one of a set which came from the laundry at the Royal School, Wolverhampton.
