Date:February 1946

Description:This view was taken from outside The Picture House. In the centre is the public library which occupied this site until 1999, when it moved to part of the Shire Hall on Market Square. The building on the right, with the banner, is the Odeon cinema (now the Apollo) which is showing 'When You Came Along'.

A long period of rainy weather resulted in the River Sow rising to its highest level ever recorded, flooding the railway station and stopping all traffic. At the junction of Newport Road and Bridge Street the water was two feet deep. Cottage dwellers had to be rescued by boat and one house was washed away.
