Date:February 1946

Description:View of Doxey Road from just over the Broad Eye Bridge during the flood of 1946. The houses to the left are where the Conservative Party Headquarters stands today. In the background can be seen the Castle Tavern public house and on the right are the railway goods and coal yard;

A long period of rainy weather resulted in the River Sow rising to its highest level ever recorded, flooding the railway station and stopping all traffic. At the junction of Newport Road and Bridge Street the water was two feet deep. Cottage dwellers had to be rescued by boat and one house was washed away.
