Description:When Trentham Hall was rebuilt by Sir Charles Barry between 1834 and 1849 a new form of lighting was installed at the Hall: gas.

As the nearest gas supplier was located in Etruria, the Trentham Estate decided to generate their own Gas supply. The site of the new Gas works was located in a former quarry located in Park Drive. The quarry had originally supplied the stone for an earlier building of Trentham Hall. The area provided a ready-made enclosure for a gasometer, and a cottage was built for the Gas Maker.

The Derbyshire family came from Worsley, Lancashire, and they ran the Gasworks for over 35 years. By 1891, the Gasworks had become redundant. The Hall was now being supplied with electricity from a turbine located further upstream on the River Trent.
