Enderly Mills
He started his business career in the woollen trade with the firm of Messrs. S. & J.Watts and Co., of Manchester, and later joined his cousin, Mr John Hammond, of the firm of Messrs. John Hammond and Co., Manchester. About the year 1883, Messrs. Hammond and Co, acquired the Enderley Mills, Newcastle, the firm remaining a private company until 1895 when it was converted into a private limited liability company, Mr Lovatt being one of the three managing directors and having sole control of Enderley Mills. Under his direction the business greatly developed, the company securing many important public contracts for uniform clothing and the factory became the principal uniform clothing factory in the country. Owing to failing eyesight Mr Lovatt retired from the company in 1918. On his retirement from the business his eldest son (Major W.M. Lovatt, M.C.) and Mr R Bassett became managing directors of the company, and they still remain directors.'
