National United Order of Free Gardeners sash

Date:1890 - 1920 (c.)

Description:Green silk sash of National United Order of Free Gardeners. White stripes running length of each edge. Gilt wire fringe at each end, run through at joint with red wire thread. At centre is eight point start of sequins and coiled wire, surmounted by padded section covered in green and red satin with wire coil decoration and tin coat of arms. Whole emblem mounted on cardboard star template, stitched and pinned to sash.

From the Ash Trees lodge of the National Order of Free Gardeners, based at Four Ashes, Enville.

The Free Gardeners were a friendly society founded in Scotland in the mid 17th century. As with other similar organisations, their aims were to share secrets of their profession and mutual aid. The charitable and mutual help role became dominant in the 19th century.
