Description:Bert Shardlow is seated 2nd from the right. Also in this group are Tom Midwinter (2nd from left, back row) and Bert's brother Fred (standing far right).

Bert Shardlow was born in 1910 in Church Street Stone. He lived all of his life in Stone working as a boat builder in Crown Street. He attended St. Michael's Church where he was a choir member and soloist.

He was a fine sportsman and played football for a very successful Stone St. Michael's team before signing as an amateur for Port Vale. Later he signed professionally for Stafford Rangers. Forced to retire from football after an ankle injury he turned to cricket and was a first team stalwart for Stone Cricket Club. In 1947 he was the first person to sign for Leek professionally after the war and spent 8 years with them. After leaving Leek he went on to play professionally for Crewe and finished his career at West Bromwich Dartmouth.

He played many times for Staffordshire between 1937 and 1958. He represented the Minor Counties combined team against Yorkshire, the M.C.C. and South Africa. He was also a very accomplished snooker, billiard and tennis player.

In 1939 he married Nellie Evans from Knutton who later became district nurse and midwife in Stone. They lived all their married life in Longfield Avenue, Walton having three sons, Anthony, Paul and Neil.
