Description:Croxden Abbey ruins under snow. A limited edition print after a watercolour by Robin Ansell (b.1934). This watercolour was the winning entry in 'Staffordshire Views 1998', a watercolour competition sponsored by the Staffordshire Newsletter.
The Cistercian Abbey of Croxden was founded in the 1170s by Bertram de Verdun, lord of Alton. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538 the roofs were removed and the buildings quarried for building stone. The monastic ruins are the most extensive in Staffordshire.
