Description:George Tollet (1767-1855) of Betley Hall. Born George Embury, he was a descendant through a female line of the first George Tollet, purchaser of Betley Hall. Under a settlement, he changed his surname, and, after the deaths of Charles Tollet (died 1796) and his widow (died 1807), succeeded to the Betley Hall estate. He was an agriculturalist, cattle-breeder, and ornithologist. He qualified as a barrister of Lincoln's Inn, and was recorder of Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1792. He corresponded with Charles Darwin on cattle-breeding and heredity, and one of his daughters checked the manuscript of 'The Origin of the Species' for style. His daughters were also friends of Florence Nightingale and Mrs Gaskell. Engraved by S.W. Reynolds after a painting by Richard Ansdell. Published 8th May 1844 by Thomas Agnew, Repository of Arts, Manchester, Messrs Ackermann's, Strand, and the Anaglyphic Company, Berners Street, London. Printed by Brookes and Harrison.
