Description:George Augustus Selwyn (1809-1878), he was the first Bishop of New Zealand 1841-1858, Primate of New Zealand 1858-1868, and was Bishop of Lichfield 1868-1878. On his way over to new Zealand he learnt the Maori language, so he could practice missionary work with both the English and the Maori speaking populations. He died at the Bishop's Palace, Lichfield, and was buried in Lichfield Cathedral, where his beautiful tomb can be seen. Selwyn College, Cambridge is named in his honour.
